How I made this knife:
A center core of 1095 was forge-welded between two bars of steel which I made from a chainsaw blade, thus creating the intricate patterning. I hammered the blade to the rough shape, then finished up with a grind. I then etched the blade in acid to bring out the pattern and used progressively finer polishing belts to create a brilliant shine. The fuchi is wrought iron, selectively polished to match the shape of the handle and scabbard, yet reveal the original pattern of pits and grain when the blade is exposed.
The handle and scabbard is one piece of zircote wood with a center layer of purpleheart. Inside I have added soft leather soaked with mink oil. Inlaid into the handle is a tear drop of picture jasper, framed in a fine silver bezel. Silver dot accents have also be inlaid to provide visual interest.
